"I Miss Iraq. I Miss My Gun. I Miss My War." - BY BRIAN MOCKENHAUPT →
This is a great article of what it feels like after being at war. During my mid-tour leave, when I was home in a sleepy town about to see a musical, my dad had asked me what it feels like to be home. All I could think of was my first concert; Metalica. After the concert the whole world slowed, was quiet. It was like that. Getting back from Iraq, and later Afghanistan, the world had slowed. I was lucky. I didn’t get shot at or blown up but I’ll never forget the feeling, being surrounded by people and vehicles and not knowing if one minute that one of them were going off. Or when I wake up, go outside of my compound, and then find a bunch of Iraqis pointing at something and it turns out to be a highly explosive round with wires sticking out of it.
